La Poderosa 990 (WMYM-AM) is the new flagship radio station for FIU football, with its play-by-play blending English and Spanish. Home men’s basketball games will be added in November, and home baseball games will join when the season begins in February.
Starting October 7, La Poderosa will carry all home and road FIU football games for the rest of the season, with dedicated pregame and postgame coverage. The broadcast team will be Tony Calatayud on play-by-play, Anthony Calatayud on color, and Chambi Campos as analyst.
The partnership also includes year-round promotional support across La Poderosa’s lineup, including on-air features, coach and student-athlete interviews, ticket promotions, and special events coverage.
FIU Director of Athletics Scott Carr said, “This partnership represents an exciting opportunity to expand the reach of FIU Athletics in a way that truly reflects the community we serve. We’re thrilled to have FIU football back on a premier terrestrial radio station and equally excited to broaden our coverage to include men’s basketball and baseball. La Poderosa has an incredible connection to the South Florida community, and together we will introduce FIU Athletics to new audiences while creating an innovative listening experience unlike anything else in collegiate sports.”
La Poderosa 990 President Tony Calatayud stated, “We at La Poderosa always strive to be on the cutting edge of media and technology and moving on new frontiers. Our radio partnership with one of America’s great institutions, FIU, in being the first to combine to broadcast college football games in Spanglish falls exactly in that wheelhouse.”
