Podcast advertising is delivering better returns than social media, display, video, or search, and the gap keeps widening. A new report lays out the numbers behind podcasting’s climb from experimental ad channel to what Audacy says is a top performer on the media plan.
In the broadcaster’s latest State of Audio report 75% of respondents named podcast hosts the most authentic voice in advertising, compared with 63% for cable TV presenters, 58% for YouTube streamers and 54% for social media influencers. Fifty-five percent of listeners said their strongest connection to a creator starts through a podcast feed, compared with 15% who cited social media.
That trust is translating into results for shows well short of celebrity scale. Advertisers on shows with monthly audiences under 250,000 saw a 22% lower cost per acquisition than those buying the biggest shows, according to Podscribe’s Q4 2024 benchmark report. Podcast listeners are 27% more likely to be influenced by topic experts than well-known celebrities, per Audacy’s own research.
That trust let listeners to draw a clear line on artificial intelligence.
A majority approved of AI handling backend tasks such as research, transcription and cover art, but support collapsed once AI touched the host’s voice. Seventy-five percent of weekly podcast consumers said they would disapprove of a podcast hosted by an AI-generated voice, and 62% said they view AI as at least somewhat of a threat to podcast credibility, according to Edison Research data cited in the report.
Audacy also cites an econometric study from Acast and Annalect putting podcast advertising’s average return on investment at 4.2 times spend, ahead of social media at 3.6x, online display at 3.2x, digital video at 3x and search at 2.2x. Podcast ad spend is projected to reach $3.0 billion in 2026, per eMarketer. Average monthly spend per new podcast advertiser has more than doubled in the past year, climbing from $20,000 to $42,000, and the number of new advertisers entering the category has grown 129% over the past five years.
