Local Northern VA Radio Station In Jeopardy After School Cuts

Residents of Woodstock, VA were surprised to find their local radio station, WUDS 94.9, off the air on October 10. The nonprofit low-power FM, known for its diverse music playlist and global news, ceased its operations without prior warning to its listeners.

Radio host Kyle Gutshall expressed his disappointment over not being able to notify listeners in advance to the Northern Virginia Daily. Gutshall, who joined the station in 2016, also hosted The KG Morning Show, featuring a mix of music genres and local, college, and pro sports discussions.

WUDS 94.9 was founded in 2015 by Pete Wenk, a board member at Massanutten Military Academy. The academy was also a significant supporter of the station, according to Gutshall. Despite the support, challenges included rising operational costs and a lack of interest among MMA cadets to participate actively in the station.

The FCC has granted a Special Temporary Authority allowing the station to remain silent for up to 180 days from October 20, while The station could potentially find new management during this period.
