5 Questions With Angela Yee

0

Last week Breakfast Club co-host Angela Yee announced she’ll be leaving the Premiere syndicated show this Fall to host her own show. Yee’s midday program will launch on 30 stations, including Power 105.1 in New York City where the Breakfast Club is hear now. We spoke to Yee on Friday about going solo, after 13 years as a co-host.

Radio Ink: How hard was it to break away from the successful show you helped put on the map?
Angela: It’s definitely scary but in a great way.  I knew that I wanted to helm my own show and had expressed those sentiments, so this is what I asked for.  I put in 12 years as part of the Breakfast Club team and the timing plus the opportunity to create something new feels right.

Radio Ink: Why did you want to go out on your own?
Angela: I missed being able to curate my own content.  When you are dealing with 3 different personalities there is a lot of compromising and there is so much I want to be able to do.  I love developing segments and producing.  This will put me back in the driver’s seat where I can call the shots, and it’s a groundbreaking opportunity that will be meaningful for other women, especially black women.  This is about creating opportunities for other deserving people and being in the position to do that.

Radio Ink: What will the show be about, the content? What can your fans expect?
Angela: I’ve already been mapping out the show and what I can say at this point is that it will be positive and uplifting, it will support creatives and entrepreneurs, and give exposure to the next wave of stars.  You can look forward to thoughtful conversations and fun, relevant topics.

Radio Ink: How quickly do you think you can grow the number of stations you are on?
Angela: I’m not even focused on that! I’ll let the IHeart team do their part and my part is to have the most compelling show possible. I have confidence that they’ll be as supportive as possible because they’re invested in my brand as well. We all have a lot on the line.

Radio Ink: How badly do you want to secure more stations than the Breakfast Club?
Angela: In an ideal world we would have the same amount of stations with their show leading into mine.  That would be true blessing.
