In a memo to the WTOP staff, McMearty, who was Director of News & Programming since June of 2015, said “many of you weren’t born when I started as an overnight AE.” McMearty began his run at WTOP in 1992 working 9 p.m to 5 a.m. as Assistant Editor.

He’s been an Editor, Producer, Reporter, Anchor, Sports Reporter, Assistant News Director, News Director, and Director of News and Programming. In addition to being the top billing radio station in the country, in 2018 WTOP won 44 major awards for excellence in journalism and has been recognized four times in the past nine years with the National Edward R. Murrow award for Overall Excellence.

McMearty says he’ll be spending more time taking care of his mom who’s now in assisted living. He thanked Jim Farley for taking a chance on him as News Director, and GM Joel Oxley for taking a chance on him as Program Director.

More from Mike’s memo to the WTOP staff: “I’ll always bleed WTOP blue and continue to root for everyone from the sidelines. You all are like family to me. I’ve been proud to lead you to this point and know that the future of the station is bright.”
