Native American Awards Night Showcases Indigenous Talent

The Native American Journalists Association presented more than 230 awards recognizing the best coverage of Indian Country during the 2019 NAJA National Native Media Awards Banquet at the Mystic Lake Center in Prior Lake, MN. Tyler Jones won five awards for his work in and around the Lawrence, KS, area with 1320KLWN-AM/101.7FM.

The annual competition recognizes excellence in reporting by indigenous and non-indigenous journalists from the U.S. and Canada. NAJA received more than 600 entries across the following categories:
• Student Division
• Associate Division I – (Circulation below 5,000)
• Associate Division II – (Circulation 5,000 – 10,000)
• Associate Division III – (Circulation above 10,000)
• Professional Division I – (Circulation below 5,000)
• Professional Division II – (Circulation 5,000 – 10,000)
• Professional Division III – (Circulation above 10,000)

The 2019 NAJA-Medill Milestone Achievement Award went to Mark Trahant (Shoshone-Bannock).

The 2019 NAJA Richard LaCourse Award went to Acee Agoyo (Ohkay Owingeh) and Kevin Abourezk (Rosebud Sioux).

The 2019 NAJA Elias Boudinot Free Press Award went to Karyn Pugliese (Algonquin) and Justin Brake of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.
