What Should Your News Director Make?

Of course, that’s assuming one of your radio stations even has a News Director these days. According to the 2018 RTNDA/Hofstra University Newsroom Survey, small market news directors are making $30,000 per year. In medium markets, they are making $35,000. In large markets the salary jumps to $53,000. And in major markets, the median salary for a news director is $82,500.

This chart from the RTNDA Survey shows the median salaries for six news- and sports-related positions. Major markets are those with 1 million or more listeners. Large markets have 250,000 to 1 million listeners; medium markets are from 50,000 to 250,000; and small markets have fewer than 50,000 listeners.

The RTNDA report says radio salaries grew on pace with average U.S. wage growth in 2017, and median starting pay is up by more than 10%. The survey was conducted in the fourth quarter of 2017 among a random sample of 3,542 radio stations. Valid responses came from 415 radio news directors and general managers representing 1,110 radio stations.
