
WTOP/Washington, DC, has been honored with nine Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards by the Radio Television Digital News Association. The WTOP news team was recognized in the Overall Excellence category for the seventh time in the past nine years for its coverage of the DC region. WTOP was also singled out in the Breaking News category and for Best Newscast. Both entries dealt with the Congressional baseball practice shooting.
Individual accolades were presented for:
— Excellence in Innovation, “The Investigation Continues,” a digital podcast series by reporter Neal Augenstein with help from Ginger Whitaker, Tiffany Arnold, and Omama Altaleb.
— Jason Fraley was awarded honors in the Excellence in Sound category for his feature on the music behind “La La Land.”
— Chris Core scored big in the Excellence in Writing category for his ongoing commentary “Core Values.”
— For her work on the story behind “Carlos Bell,” Megan Cloherty received awards in the Investigative Reporting category.
— JJ Green’s in-depth expose exploring Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, won in the News Series category for “Anatomy of a Russian Attack.”
— John Domen was honored in the Sports Reporting category for the story of how one woman honors the memory and loss of her Blue Angel husband while running in the Marine Corps Marathon.
“Technology and news are the same in one aspect, they never stop,” said Mike McMearty, WTOP’s Director of News and Programming. “Our job is to not only keep up with both, but to always stay one step ahead. These awards are a reminder of that and we are extremely proud of this recognition.”
