WTMJ won five Murrow Awards from the RTDNA. The awards were given in categories ranging from Breaking News Coverage to Excellence in writing to Excellence in Video.
The awards are:
Breaking News Coverage – “Milwaukee Police Officer Acquitted.” In 2016, Milwaukee police officer Dominique Heaggan-Brown faced homicide charges for his role in the shooting death of Sylville Smith.
Excellence in Sound – “Do My Job – Barista” – Mike Spaulding
The hectic and artistic life of a coffee barista.
Excellence in Video – “Rides & Reins” – Jane Matenaer, Jay Sorgi and Dan Schenek WTMJ’s Jane Matenaer visited Rides & Reins, a low-cost therapeutic horseback riding center for children with emotional and physical needs.
Excellence in Writing – “The Opioid Crisis – Losing Alexis” – Erik Bilstad
Melanie Crandall, of Jefferson, WI, sits down with WTMJ’s Erik Bilstad following the fatal overdose of her 17-year-old daughter, Alexis.
Feature Reporting – “Lance Sijan Remembered” – Gene Mueller
Medal of Honor recipient and Milwaukee native Lance Sijan was killed in Vietnam. Fifty years later, many of his friends still remember his final days.
