Radio Drives Results…59 Miles Away!

Our thanks to Aaron Criswell from Adams Radio Group’s Classic Rocker KSNM-FM in Las Cruces, New Mexico, for today’s advertiser success story. Aaron tells Radio Ink about his client Forghedaboudit New York Italian Cuisine, which is located in Deming, New Mexico. He put together a campaign in Las Cruces to drive business to his client, which resulted in sales doubling since using radio.

Criswell says Deming, is 59 miles west of Las Cruces. It’s a town of just over 11,000 people. Since 2012, local restaurant Forghedaboudit Pizza has been serving authentic New York Italian Cuisine, and has been named the Best Pizza in the Southwest at the International Pizza Expo and is a two-time National Buffalo Wing Champion. “When I had the opportunity, I sat down with the owner and his wife, listened to their concerns, discussed the power of radio, and came up with some ideas for their commercials. Reluctantly, they agreed on a 26-week commitment and off I went. The day the campaign began the owner sent me a message that three tables came in from the commercials. Shortly after, a solider from Ft. Bliss (over 100 miles away) said he drove to have dinner because he heard the radio advertisement.”

Owner Bob Yacone tells Radio Ink Forghedaboudit Pizza was started from the kitchen of his house in Denning five years ago. “We made fliers and did delivery only after 5 p.m. We came to New Mexico after tiring from New York’s crazy-fast and expensive lifestyle. Nobody in our house or in our family ever went to culinary school, owned a restaurant, or even took a cooking class.”

Yacone says they taught themselves about business. It was on-the-job training for Yacone, his wife and daughter. “A lot of our recipes were handed down from my grandmother from Italy. The first two years at Forghedaboudit were filled with growing pains and lack of quality employees.”

Their hard work and persistence certainly paid off. Yacone eventually moved the business from a small 40-seat restaurant into a custom-built, bigger location. And they are nationally recognized for their product. “We are in our fourth year and have three national championships for our pizza and wings.”

Still, Yacone wanted to see more growth, so he turned to radio when billboards, hotel advertisements, and newspaper ads weren’t working. “We ran into Aaron Criswell, a local radio sales rep with serious knowledge and cutting-edge ideas. After our meeting, he began working on increasing our market presence. Working with Aaron, we developed a detailed strategy to segment several satirical ads targeting the lack of quality food in Las Cruces, using Apple Siri as the scapegoat. What a hit! Our business increased dramatically in the first six months and made my wife, who was skeptical of radio, a believer. Currently we are running the radio ads three days a week, targeting particular drive-time patterns. It has been the best advertising money we have spent in a long time. A day doesn’t go by without someone mentioning the radio spots and the professional quality they convey. I truly believe that radio is an amazing tool, and done correctly, can bring a greater market presence to anyone’s business who’s looking to increase revenue.”
