“We Have Nothing Against Nielsen”

Those were the words of David Field, Wednesday, after taking a question about the announced Shazam ratings service. Entercom and three other companies announced they were launching a new app-based ratings service with Shazam, although the details about the service were minimal, and when it will be ready is unknown.

Field said the Shazam ratings service, which is supposed to capture listening when an app is launched on a smartphone, is an exciting opportunity which has significant potential. “We have nothing against Nielsen. They are a great organization and have been a good partner for broadcasters for a long time, but competition is a good thing. We think there’s potential to significantly enhance sample sizes, enhance data collection and our knowledge of our listeners, and to boost our share of media mix.” Entercom, iHeartMedia, Cumulus, and Cox were part of the announcement last week. No other radio companies were invited to participate and there was no word on whether the new service, when launched, would be MRC accredited.
