Which Candidates Are Buying Radio?

Radio executives have high hopes that political ad spending is going to pull the industry out of its flat-to-down revenue-growth quicksand. Media Monitors has put together a snapshot of which candidates are spending money on radio as we edge closer to actually casting votes. They compiled data from Omaha, Des Moines, and the Quad Cities of Iowa/Illinois to show what’s happening in Iowa and in New Hampshire. They also pulled data from Boston and Portsmouth-Dover, NH. Here are the findings…

– Hillary Clinton numbers from Des Moines and the Quad Cities show a total of 482 spots run between January 1, 2016 and January 15, 2016. Clinton ran no spots in Omaha.
– Next was Ted Cruz whose numbers from Des Moines, the Quad Cities, and Omaha totaled 218 radio spots that were part of the Cruz For President buy, however, his Super PAC – Keep The Promise – ran a total of 26 spots in the three Iowa markets we featured.
– Donald Trump radio spots that ran in Des Moines, the Quad Cities, and Omaha totaled 187 ads.
– Bernie Sanders did not buy Omaha, but ran spots in Des Moines and the Quad Cities totaling 123 spots.
– Marco Rubio’s Super PAC – Conservative Solutions – also ran in Des Moines, Omaha, and the Quad Cities to the tune of 74 units counted.
– And finally, Mike Huckabee’s Super PAC – Pursuing America’s Greatness – aired 50 times in Des Moines, the Quad Cities, and Omaha.

In two spotlight markets for New Hampshire, the advertising placement looked like this:
– Hillary Clinton ran 1,110 spots in both Boston and Portsmouth-Dover putting her on top.
– Bernie Sanders was next with 899 spots in the two reference cities we pulled.
– Marco Rubio’s Super PAC is running an interesting strategy with 329 spots in Portsmouth-Dover with a highly critical message against Chris Christie, while another 29 spots talked about the merit of their candidate. That brings Rubio’s Super PAC spots to 358 ads.
– Next was Ted Cruz with spots appearing in the Boston market and Portsmouth-Dover, New Hampshire, and his message was heard 109 times.
– Donald Trump played 76 times in the time frame in Portsmouth-Dover and 10 times in Boston giving him 86 spots.
– Chris Christie aired 24 spots in Portsmouth-Dover, while his Super PAC – America Leads – ran 21 spots in Portsmouth-Dover and Boston.
– Mike Huckabee did not run any spots in Portsmouth-Dover or Boston.
