Leading Small Market Radio Is Anything but a Small Job

Outsiders hear “small market radio” and picture fewer listeners, fewer dollars, maybe a stop on the way to somewhere bigger. The people actually running those markets know the stakes are hardly minuscule, because you can’t fake local in a small town.

In our upcoming October issue, Radio Ink asked the 2026 Radio Wayne Market Manager/General Manager (Markets 21+) finalists what people outside a medium or smaller market don’t fully appreciate about leading in one.

Here’s what they told us:

“As a leader in a smaller market, you have to be a bit of a Swiss Army knife. Being in the trenches with my team members highlights their value to the organization. From filling in on-air, to getting my hands dirty on an engineering project, it shows what they do is important to our success. Also, in a smaller market, you develop more personal relationships with your listeners, business leaders, advertisers and the community as a whole. Those relationships give you a better view of their needs and challenges because you face them too. That knowledge creates an unbreakable connection with those who rely on you.”

“You are interacting daily with clients and business owners that are spending their OWN money with you. It is mostly local direct business, and the amount of trust they put in us as marketers is awe-inspiring.”

“Leading a smaller market certainly comes with plenty of challenges: fewer resources, fewer people, and fewer dollars than larger markets. But small-market radio also has a tremendous advantage. In a smaller market, local radio is community radio. Small market radio doesn’t just broadcast to the community. It becomes part of it, if it’s done right. We may not have the resources of a major market. But we have something they can’t manufacture: relationships. We know the people we’re working for. We know the businesses we’re helping. And we know, intimately, the community we’re serving because we’re part of it. We’re not just broadcasting to our community. We’re helping build it.”
