One of the founding voices of The Current is heading back to morning drive, this time trading indie rock for Beethoven. Steve Seel has been named host of the weekday Morning Show on YourClassical MPR 99.5 (KSJN) in the Twin Cities, succeeding John Birge.
Birge signed off after 21 years as morning host and 29 years with Classical MPR in August.
Seel debuts in the slot on October 5. He currently hosts Sunday through Tuesday evenings on YourClassical MPR, hosts the weekend national concert program SymphonyCast, produces and hosts regional concert broadcasts with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and has been a regular fill-in host for the station. He will keep SymphonyCast, while his program Extra Eclectic airs its final episode September 28.
When MPR launched The Current in 2005, Seel became one of its founding voices, first as midday host and then, starting in 2009, as co-host of The Morning Show alongside Jill Riley. He returned to YourClassical in 2015, where he has hosted evenings and Extra Eclectic.
Seel said, “I’m honored to be taking over the chair for my good friend and colleague John Birge in the mornings on Your Classical MPR. While John is in no way replaceable, I promise to bring listeners all of this wonderful music with the same amount of love, and a little humor, too. I can’t wait to get started.”
