American Public Media Group’s Glen Nelson Center has opened applications for the 2026 Next Challenge for Media & Journalism, a national competition that will distribute $250,000 to nonprofit and for-profit startups advancing local journalism innovation.
The Catalyst Award for Local News Innovation will recognize a nonprofit or for-profit newsroom advancing a new model for local journalism. The Cornerstone Award for Local News Infrastructure will honor a technology startup developing digital tools for journalists and news organizations. The Pioneer Award for Creator Journalism will recognize an independent journalist using digital platforms to deepen local audience engagement.
Applications are open through March 10. Funding will support early-stage ventures across three categories, with one Grand Prize winner eligible to receive up to $75,000.
Glen Nelson Center Executive Director Jeff Freeland Nelson said, “This is a defining moment for local journalists. We are witnessing the critical work and innovation happening as newsrooms, media tech companies, and independent journalists step up to cover the news that matters most to their communities. The Next Challenge exists to fuel that innovation, support risk-takers, and ensure local journalism continues to play its vital role in serving our democracy.”
