The Challenge of Operating an AM These Days

The Northern Virginia Daily has the details about Allen Shaw’s Centennial Broadcasting selling the station previously known as WINC-AM to Colonial Radio Group of Williamsport. The station, now using the calls WZFC, just celebrated its 80th anniversary. It was sold for $25,000.

It’s the Northern Shenandoah Valley’s oldest radio station.

Centennial offered WINC-AM to Metro Radio of Fairfax, which is buying two of its other stations, free of charge, but Metro didn’t want it. Shaw told the paper, “Many AM radio stations are not able to make enough money to make buying them worthwhile.” Centennial has owned the station since 2007. The format is mostly syndicated talk.

If Colonial didn’t come along Centennial may have to turn off the lights and hand the license back to the FCC. “We would have hated to do that,” he told the paper. “It would have been bad for the community, considering the station’s history.”

The new owners are hoping to add more local programming to the station.
