Distancing Affects ‘Dead Radio Contest’

Oink Ink Radio, a NYC based radio ad agency, had to change plans for its annual copywriters award. The ‘Dead Radio Contest’ invites copywriters, worldwide, to provide their favorite, never-produced radio scripts.

This years winner, Scott Dahl, Periscope Agency, MN, was to have received an all-expenses paid weekend trip to a recording studio in NYC where his rejected script would be recorded and revived. The trip had to be postponed because of COVID restrictions, and the spot was recorded remotely.

The session required three voice actors with remote home recording software. Direction and recording was handled in three cities, New York, Philadelphia and Minneapolis.

“We work remotely with audio studios, voice actors and writers every day,” said Oink Ink partner Dan Price, “so we were able to coordinate it all fairly easily.”

“It’s funny. Every time I write a radio spot that dies, I think to myself, ‘Well, I could always enter it in the Dead Radio contest.’ This year I’m glad I did. I got to bring it back to life with some of the best at crafting radio,” said Dahl.
