Host Loses House. Community Responds.

(By Ed Ryan) Usually we report on how radio helps its local communities whenever there’s a need. This week, listeners to iHeartMedia’s XL 106.7 in Orlando returned the favor when host Johnny Magic lost his home in a fire.

The fire broke out last Friday in Magic’s fireplace. He called the fire department, got his son Alex and dogs outside the house, and expected the fire department would put it out quickly and everything would be fine as he explained in this press conference. But the fire quickly spread and the family lost everything but the clothes on their back.

A GoFundMe page was started and the community quickly contributed $60,000. In the press conference Magic said it’s surreal hearing about all the people in the community who are helping him.

The Orlando iHeart team informed Radio Ink, Wednesday night, that Magic will be shutting down the GoFundMe page on Thursday and donating the money beyond his immediate needs to The Baby DJ Foundation to help others who’ve been impacted by fires that do not have the resources he does.

Magic is known for his community fundraising and supporting others, in the three decades he’s been on the air.
