Washington Priorities: A Hispanic Broadcaster’s View

0

“Washington Update” is just one of the panel discussions set for the Hispanic Radio Conference coming up March 25-26 at the Intercontinental At Doral in Miami. Tomas Martinez, Owner/CEO Solmart Media will be a member of the panel. He gave Radio Ink a preview.

Radio Ink: Outside of the election, what are the areas we should be watching in the coming year?
Martinez: The census and new voter registration are two of our top priorities in 2020. We are committed to promote these two initiatives and have started doing so already. We will also continue to inform our undocumented audience as to their rights and ways in which they could reach their legal status in this country.

Radio Ink: Is the immigration debate still high on the list of concerns for Hispanic radio consumers?
Martinez: Absolutely, higher than ever. We have covered raids, family separations, deportations, as well as successful cases which have been reported in our area of coverage. And family separations, which a lot of our listeners have suffered.

Radio Ink: Do you think Hispanic broadcasters have a voice that is being heard in Washington?
Martinez: I believe that some of us do try to have that voice, especially through the efforts of the NAB. For the last two years I have been a member of the Small and Medium Size Markets Committee and have seen how minorities in general are represented there as well as in other organizations. I would love to see a united front of Hispanic broadcasters which will represent the needs of our Hispanic radio industry.

Radio Ink: How do radio station ownership rules play out for Hispanic ownership of properties?
Martinez: We support deregulation and the minority tax incentive, these two initiatives will encourage new investments in radio as well as encourage new minority owners.

Don’t miss the rest of what Tomas Martinez has to say, exclusively at the Hispanic Radio Conference. He will be joined by David Honig, President Emeritus and Senior Advisor to the Multicultural Media, Telecom, and Internet Counsel; C. Patrick Roberts, President/CEO, Florida Association of Broadcasters; and Alexander Sanjenis, Media Advisor to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, in a session led by Frank Montero, Co-Managing Partner, Fletcher, Heald & Hildreth.
