Host Quits After Co-Host Dies

Neversink Broadcasting’s WABT in the Poconos lost their morning show co-host Elisa Chase last month. She died at the age of 38 after a short illness. The day after her memorial service, her husband died. That was all Gary Smith could take.

After taking a little time off, Smith went back on the air to do a memorial show for Chase. He knew that would be his final show after being on the air for decades in the area.

Smith told The Pocono Record after that show he just couldn’t do it anymore. “I told the boss I was done.” He said that last broadcast was the toughest show he ever had to do, but it just wasn’t the same and it was time to move on.

Smith and Chase were on the air together for 18 years. He told the paper they were very close friends. “We used to talk three or four times after the show on the phone. We were family. After I lost her, I didn’t care anymore”

The station has begun the search for a new morning show.
