Host Takes Calls About Fired Competitors

It doesn’t look like what happened in Des Moines is going to happen in Indianapolis. Despite a Change.org campaign that has about 6,000 signatures on it, Indy sports talkers Query and Schultz are still off the air. Their competitor John Gilva, who hosts The Ride with JMV on Emmis’ WFNI-FM (The Fan) took calls on his show about the duo losing their jobs.

Indystar.com reports that Gilva believes having more competition made everyone better.

He said the firing of Query and Schultz was a loss for the entire city of Indianapolis. “When we lose someone like that, it makes all of us worse. The more shows we have, the better we all are.”

Kent Sterling was also quoted in the piece. Sterling hosted a sports show in Indianapolis until last year. He does not believe cheaper is better when it comes to radio. “The best radio is local. Even bad local radio is better than great national radio.”

He may get an argument on that last statement. Is bad local really better than great national to the listener?

Jake Query seems to be taking his situation in stride. A lot of the hosts that were let go last week have much the same attitude as his. “It is what it is, you know. Of course, it always was in the back of my mind it could happen. It’s radio.”
