Radio Works Another Little Miracle

We love printing heartwarming stories and this one is pretty special.

Ray Ricci is the host of the Unforgettable Doowop Show on WBNJ 91.9 FM/Barnegat, NJ. Ricci receives plenty of mail but recently he got a letter that really got his attention. It came from a 15-year-old girl named Sandra Roberts, who lives in Barnegat where the WBNJ studio is located.

Sandra sang the praises of her favorite radio host and his show, and expressed her passion for the music from the late 50s and early 60s that he plays. She even listed a bunch of requests.

But there’s more to it than that. Sandra has Autism. She used to have a tough time communicating and expressing herself. Then her mom introduced Sandra to the Unforgettable Doowop Show and that started to change. Now she never misses Ricci’s Friday night show and his music has opened her up and now she is a different person.

When Ricci heard about this, he and WBNJ General Manager Bill Clanton Jr. decided to invite her and her family into the radio station for a tour. Sandra got an addition surprise when told she was also there to be a guest DJ on the Unforgettable Doowop Show.

During the show which aired April 26th Sandra was not shy about demonstrating her knowledge of the artists and songs. “She knows this music almost better than me,” said DJ Ray.

“This made for a memorable moment for Sandra, and I’m happy we were able to make it happen.” said Bill Clanton Jr. General Manager and Program Director of WBNJ 91.9 FM.

Now there’s a story that puts all the crazy news of the world out of mind for a moment and reminds you what’s important. And radio played a part in that.

If your station has an inspiring story like this to share, please send it to [email protected] — we’d love to run it.
