Howard Stern Thought He Had Cancer

1

The workaholic SiriusXM morning show superstar rarely misses a show, dating back through his radio days. In May of 2017 he abruptly canceled his show sending fans into a conspiracy frenzy. When Stern returned to the show a few days later he told everyone he had the flu. It was all a lie. He was on his way to surgery to remove a growth on his kidney he thought was cancer.

Turns out the growth was a harmless cyst.

Stern’s new book Howard Stern Comes Again is due out May 14, and in a lengthy piece in The Hollywood Reporter Stern opens up about the cancer scare, his many regrets, his failed first marriage, how crappy he treated radio guests, and why he’s unable to read his first two books.

Stern tells reporter Lacey Rose in the ’90s he did an interview with Robin Williams, which still ranks among his biggest regrets, in part because it’s too late to apologize. He’s apologized to many others for his behavior and probing personal questions, according to the story. “I loved Robin Williams, but there I am beating him over the head with, like, ‘Hey, I hear you’re ***** your nanny?’ I could have had a great conversation, but I’m playing to the audience. They want to hear outrageousness, and that’s my arrogance thinking that Robin Williams can’t entertain my audience. How stupid am I?”

He also describes to Rose how he’s evolved as a host and an interviewer and how some people don’t like it, including former co-host Artie Lange who says Stern’s gone soft.

Stern is now 65 years old and his latest contract is up in 2020. He’s taken up painting and ponders about spending hours painting rather than returning to the studio. Will this be his last run? Hard to imagine that. He appears to be just as married to being on the air, doing radio, as anything else in his life.

  1. I never met Howard, (I did work with the guy who fired him from WNBC) -but he’s a great role model for all of us. He’s a lot more brave than I would have ever been, has the confidence needed to be “King of All Media” and isn’t afraid to admit he’s not perfect. He single-handedly was a great promotional vehicle for radio-and did a lot to build Sirius/XM. Can’t wait to read his new book. Some of us just have radio in our blood-and we can’t get away. Glad to see Howard is one. Has he gone soft? Hell no. He’s grown up.
