Radio Scammers Go To Trial

Back in the early 2000s Gary Gauthier paid for airtime on Salem owned Christian station WBTN in Tampa. He hosted a show called “It’s God’s Money,” and told listeners God wanted people to get into real estate and he knew where there were great opportunities. So, trusting the man they heard on a Christian station, people invested, and according to The Tampa Bay Times they lost everything.

The paper reports that in 2014, authorities arrested Gauthier and his business partner David Dreslin on charges of fraud, racketeering and selling unregistered securities. They are accused of bilking nearly 40 Tampa Bay-area residents out of a total of $6 million. Many lost their life savings.

The case is now going to trial. Retired dental technician Denise Ferrari told the Times, “It was a Christian station,”How could they do me wrong?” Authorities say it was all a ponzi scheme. They used investors money to pay early investors.

Dreslin and Gauthier could both face up to 30 years in prison if convicted on the criminal charges against them.
