Pandora reported 71.4 million active users for the second quarter of 2018. That’s down from 72.3 million in the first quarter of 2018 and down significantly from a year ago when active users were 76 million. Listener hours in Q2 of 2018 were 5 billion, flat when compared to Q1 of this year, and down from one year ago when listener hours were 5.22 billion.
considering at this point in 2017 Pandora was still operating in Australia and NZ, not too shabby. It also makes YoY comparisons like this tricky. Show me a Radio company who’s Q2 revenue was up 12% compared to 2017 (and don’t break out digital/event/NTR %’s as those are the only things growing). iHeart posted a 3/5% LOSS in Q2 YoY. 2 of the top 3 radio companies are in BK proceedings (or just out), and the third (Entercom) is losing value every day. Radio needs a long, hard look in the mirror. Bashing the competition is not useful, and worse it makes us look bad. Pandora/Spotify are here to stay. Instead, why don’t we focus on what we bring to the table?
