Is Joyner Really Retiring?

That’s the question Urban One CEO Alfred Liggins left everyone pondering yesterday. At the end of 2017, when Tom Joyner signed his last 2-year deal with Reach Media, he announced he’d be retiring at the end of 2019. Then, in an interview with the Atlanta Journal Constitution in January of this year he said he didn’t really want to retire but he couldn’t get a guaranteed contract from Urban One.

Yesterday, Urban One CEO Alfred Liggins seemed frustrated when speaking about Joyner’s announcement that he’d be retiring at the end of 2019. And, he sounded as if he didn’t really believe that. “Tom will still have a radio audience two years from now. I don’t know where Tom’s head is but I think there will be life after this contract.”

Liggins also said there are no plans to move Joyner’s show exclusively online. That would have a dramatic impact on revenue, he said.

In that Atlanta Journal Constitution interview back in January, doing radio is still the best job on earth. “The best part of my day is the four hours I’m on the air.”
