Why Was Dan Sileo Off The Air Monday?

It appears Entercom may be close to making some sort of change at 97.3 The Machine in San Diego. Not only was Dan Sileo not on the air Monday, which may indicate a time slot change for him — to mornings perhaps — but Kevin Klein has been wiped from the station’s website and is no longer listed in the station’s on-air schedule. Could it be that one bad tweet cost Kevin Klein his job?

By now everyone knows that Klein posted a picture of the Coronado Bridge in San Diego with the text “Jump to a new morning show.” That tweet angered some people in the San Diego community because over 400 people jumped to their death from that bridge since it was built. It also brought a bunch of negative publicity to the station, delaying Klein’s start on the air until further notice. The station just started to carry San Diego Padres baseball and that relationship was also damaged as a result of the tweet. The team said publicly it did not like the direction of the station’s format (but acknowledged there was nothing that could be done about that). Padres Executive Chairman Ron Fowler said he wanted a good radio partner that’s not offensive to the community.

Klein apologized for the tweet but has not sent out another radio related tweet since that apology on March 27, two days before he was to start on the air. We’ll keep an eye on the situation today and we would not be surprised if Dan Sileo was moved from middays to mornings, a slot he held down when working for Broadcast Company of the Americas.
