As 2017 comes to end, voice control technology is no longer a rising trend, but rather an industry standard in automobiles, mobile phones, and smart home products, to name a few. While voice control technology is making its way to radio and TV via Alexa Skills and Google Home actions, these have been primarily relegated to basic tasks such as tuning to the station or replaying a recent show. This is about to change, as the confluence of AI and voice control begin to enable contextual search, making on-demand content discovery a reality.

My biggest concern with these smart speaker systems is that, although they only respond when you address them (Alexa, Cortana, et. al.) is that they’re always listening even when you’re not giving them instructions. Who might be listening on the other end? Shades of “1984”? These very speakers, which people seem to love, could end up biting them in the, er, butt. Perfect spy devices that people unwittingly welcome into their homes. I’ll pass, thank you.
