44 Years On, Hit Country 100.5 WWKI Still Showing It Cares

Founded in 1973, when WWKI personality Dick Bronson took a call from a laid-off worker who couldn’t provide Christmas for his family, and sent him half the contents of his wallet and encouraged his listeners to do the same, We Care was born. The Kokomo, IN, community responded magnificently and the organization has been thriving since. In fact, 44 years later, We Care raised a total of $436,192.26 for 2016 and now supports five Kokomo nonprofits.

Becky Varnell, a veteran volunteer for We Care, said, “For everyone who donated and contributed: You brought hope to those in need, for those who needed the feeling of hope for Christmas. You made it possible for them. I thank you.”

John Spilman, Vice President and General Manager at Cumulus Media, added, “We’re grateful to be part of We Care’s beginnings and our continued involvement with an organization that has such an impact on the heart of our community. We Care started Monday (12/12/16) with $436,000 in the bank, then gave it all away. That really hits home.”
