WFNZ Charlotte Taking Sports To FM Dial

1

Beasley Media Group’s Sports Radio WFNZ The Fan in Charlotte, NC, is broadening its reach with the move to the FM dial, simulcasting on 102.5 FM. WFNZ was initially only found on 610AM and HD Radio frequency 1037-2. The station is the official home of the Charlotte Hornets and Charlotte 49ers football, as well as the Davidson Wildcats and ECU Pirates.

“This is an exciting time for all of us at WFNZ,” said Operations Manager/Program Director D.J. Stout. “It’s a true testament to a team who has worked so hard to finally see this happen. It’s been amazing to see the growth of our station coincide with Charlotte’s growth as a great sports town.”

The WFNZ Sports Radio lineup is:

6 to 10 a.m.: The Mac Attack with Chris McClain and Jim Celania airing

10 a.m. to 12 noon: The Call Up with Nate and QCB

12 noon to 3 p.m.: Former Carolina Panther Frank Garcia hosts Bustin’ Loose with Mark Yarbro

3 to 7 p.m.: Prime Time with Chris Kroeger with Hitman and QCB

  1. Just to be clear, WFNZ’s FM signal is a translator, not a full-size signal. It’s just 200 watts and radiates from one of the station’s four AM towers on the northwest side of Charlotte. Here’s a coverage map: https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/patg?id=W272DP-FX&s=C. It’s good to be there, but it’s not competitive with the many 100,000 watt FM signals on high towers that dominate ratings in that market.

WFNZ is also the descendant of WAYS, “61 Big WAYS,” which was Charlotte’s main (and in some ways legendary) Top 40 station, and in the late 60s into the mid ’70s was top rated in that town.
