Spotify is getting to launch a new video feature it has been testing over the past several months. The company announced the plans to begin distributing videos and podcasts with content providers that include ESPN, Comedy Central, the BBC, Vice Media and Maker Studios. The content consists of short clips, although some companies are also developing original, music-themed series specifically for Spotify.
Shiva Rajaraman, Spotify’s vice president of product, tells The Wall Street Journal, that Spotify has found that presenting contextually relevant videos—based on the kind of music people listen to or Web videos that are simply tied to music—seems to spur people to watch clips. For example, Maker Studios’ popular comedic rap series “Epic Rap Battles” has clicked with users in early tests.
