Public Media Bridge Fund Opens Pathways to Sustainability

Public media’s emergency phase is giving way to rebuilding. The Public Media Bridge Fund has launched a program that gives smaller local stations a coach, a tailored action plan, and a shot at implementation funding to build business models that outlast federal support.

Pathways to Sustainability pairs eligible organizations with expert coaches who help station leaders identify the strategies most likely to deliver operational and financial sustainability. Leadership and coach co-develop a tailored action plan, and at the end of the coaching period, organizations can apply for implementation funding to carry out the activities they have identified as core to their future.

Initiatives that explore collaborative operating models, shared or outsourced services, technology or engineering solutions, and new revenue-generating strategies are of particular interest to the Bridge Fund.

In the spring, the fund opened its rolling Collaborative Operating Models program to help public media organizations build partnerships that allow them to operate more efficiently. That followed an emergency stabilization program launched after the 2025 rescission, which awarded $26 million to 74 local public media organizations. Pathways to Sustainability is the next step in the fund’s shift from stabilization to adaptation, focused on carrying out specific operational plans with long-term potential.

Public radio and television stations that qualified for Corporation for Public Broadcasting funding as of September 30, 2025, and provide a unique local service are eligible. Support is also moving from stations to organizations, because the Bridge Fund says sustainability and strategic planning happen at the organizational level. Annual budgets must be at or below $2 million for radio-only licensees, $5 million for TV-only licensees, and $7 million for joint licensees.

Applications open October 20 and are due November 19. Program guidelines and initial application questions are available on the Bridge Fund website.

Public Media Bridge Fund Executive Director Erik Langner said, “Many local public media organizations already know how their operations need to adapt — they just require the capital and capacity to get there. Pathways to Sustainability will provide both, in the form of strategic grants and targeted coaching. Together, these resources will help stations across the system chart a feasible path forward, implement resilient business models and provide essential local public media service in their communities for years to come.”

Public Media Bridge Fund Head of Sustainability Gabrielle Jones stated, “At the Bridge Fund, sustainability means more than closing a budget gap. It means diverse revenue streams that cover organizations’ basic operating expenses and allow them to invest in high-quality local service and deep community engagement.”
