Star 99.1 FM (WAWZ) in Somerset, New Jersey, is remembering, honoring, and commemorating the 15th anniversary of 9/11 with an event called “The Empty Shoe Memorial.” The event is a tribute to remember the men, women, and children who died, honor uniformed heroes, and celebrate the spirit of strength and unity that surfaced in the days following.

Throughout July and August, Star 99.1 staff visited malls, churches, auto dealerships, retail outlets, and festivals to collect shoes for the memorial. 2,996 pairs of shoes – one pair representing every person lost in the attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the four planes that crashed, will be on display side by side in a meadow in Somerset County. The memorial will be on display from September 10 through 18. Upon completion of the Empty Shoe Memorial, all shoes will be donated to Soles 4 Souls. Their mission is to fight poverty by repurposing gently-worn shoes and distributing them to people in need.
