Another CEO is on record in favor of deregulation. The issue will be voted on by the FCC -- although the time frame is unknown -- when the Commission looks into broadcast ownership rules as part of its 2018 quadrennial review. During his earnings call Thursday, Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan said despite concerns that deregulation lead to some of the challenges radio is now having, he believes the industry needs more consolidation. That's the opinion of iHeartMedia CEO Bob Pittman and CFO Richard Bressler who sent out a company note Monday detailing why the company opposes the NAB's plan to push the FCC for more deregulation. That opinion is not shared by the NAB.

That's the big question being debated by NAB members as they try to come up with a plan to present to the FCC as part of the Commission's Quadrennial review. With a very friendly FCC, this may be a rare opportunity for radio to get exactly what it asks for -- if it's united, that is -- and we understand the industry has at least one big player who doesn't want any more deregulation.
