WPM Director Gene Purcell Passes

The director of Wisconsin Public Media, Gene Purcell, has died as a result of a traffic crash in Madison. He succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash over the weekend. He was 61.

Purcell was named director of Wisconsin Public Media in 2018. He was executive director of the Educational Communications Board. In his career he also served as News Director at the independent public radio station WLSU in La Crosse. He lead the stations successful merger with WPR in 1997.

Friends and colleagues are remembering Purcell as an “Authentic and humble advocate for public broadcasting,” in a story published on the WPR website.

A celebration of life is being planned for a future date.
