Hispanic Radio Ownership Vs Deregulation

0

The Hispanic Radio Conference is coming up March 25-26 at the Intercontinental At Doral in Miami. “Washington Update” is one of the informative panel discussions on the agenda. On the panel will be David Honig, President Emeritus and Senior Advisor to the Multicultural Media, Telecom, and Internet Council. He shared some brief insights with Radio Ink.

Radio Ink: How do radio station ownership rules play out for Hispanic ownership of properties?
Honig: The biggest pending issue is whether to deregulate the local caps and subcaps – either step would be highly disadvantageous to Hispanic owners. Subcap deregulation, particularly for FM, would bring about a great loss of equity value of AM, the heritage technology for Hispanic owners.

Radio Ink: Outside of the election, what are the areas we should be watching in the coming year?
Honig: Let’s never forget to focus on the basics: entrepreneurship opportunities and access to capital; employment non-discrimination; Spanish-language service during emergencies such as hurricanes.

Radio Ink: Is the immigration debate still high on the list of concerns for Hispanic radio consumers?
Honig: Top of the list of priorities. Who is going to protect and serve Hispanic families but radio?

Radio Ink: Do you think Hispanic broadcasters have a voice that is being heard in Washington?
Honig: LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) and MMTC (Multicultural Media, Telecom and Internet Council) are the primary voices. Formerly AHORA, too (American Hispanic Owned Radio Association) but it died several years ago. We wish it would come back!

Don’t miss the rest of what David Honig has to say, exclusively at the Hispanic Radio Conference. He will be joined by Tomas Martinez, Owner/CEO, Solmart Media; C. Patrick Roberts, President/CEO Florida Association of Broadcasters; and Alexander Sanjenis, Media Advisor to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, in a session led by Frank Montero, Co-Managing Partner, Fletcher, Heald & Hildreth.
