One Last Thing About CES

(By Buzz Knight) At CES 2020, the technology on display was so overwhelming that it’s important to take a step back and process what is most important to improve our business. I mean, this is a show that literally spanned technology on display from sex toys to flying taxis so it is important to try and narrow our focus and the concentration of our efforts.

What conversations should we be driving within our organizations that can matter most and yield the best results?

Several years ago, Kevin Cassidy from Strategic Solutions Research recommended the book The One Thing: The surprisingly simple truth behind extraordinary results by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan, and as I was flying back to Boston from CES 2020 I distilled one important priority that came to me from attending the show: WE NEED TO FOCUS OUR ATTENTION ON IMPROVING THE IN-CAR USER EXPERIENCE!

So much about CES year after year reminds us that the dashboard is a prime battleground for the radio business as technology changes the face of audio entertainment. There are more choices and consumers are offered multiple opportunities to sample other competitive products. We have to constantly be aware of how to hook them and keep them. We need to cherish great content so we remain a strong option when consumers make a choice. We also need to learn from the show’s focus on strong customer and user experience detail, and apply to our own business some of these principles.

I would recommend you gather each of your internal teams and build a plan that gives greater focus to this priority. Challenge your programmers to find methods of improving the experience. Encourage programmers and chief engineers to “ride the market” together to collaborate on ways to create a better UX.

Are they familiar with the best options available like “Quu” and their multi-sensory marketing solutions that create better engagement and make advertised products more memorable? Their ad sync patented technology is visible on HD Radio receivers enabled with the Artist Experience feature.

It’s important to note at CES 2020 that HD Radio and DTS Connected Radio were prominently on display as well.

Rich multi-media displays are commonplace and broadcasters need to be mindful of how to take advantage of the in-car screen user experience, and how to deliver now-playing information, station logos, and synchronized images like album art.

Just as the character Curly in the movie City Slickers said so well: “just one thing; stick to that and the rest don’t mean #%*&!”

It is worth making this commitment.
