Media Monitors: LA Turns To Radio For Fire Updates

The Getty fires are climbing the canyons in Los Angeles and, with evacuations are underway, residents are tuning in to local radio for live updates and information about evacuations. The fire broke out shortly after 1:30 a.m. Monday along the 405 Freeway near the Getty Center before spreading south and west, rapidly burning more than 600 acres and sending thousands of people fleeing from their homes in the dark, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Media Monitors analyzed changes in PPM listening for Los Angeles on October 29, 2019, using our new programming tool, Audio Overnights.

Local stations KFI-AM,  KEIB-AM, and KNX-AM aired news stories and interviewed local officials, as well as reviewed evacuation instructions. Compared to the same day the week prior, all stations saw significant increases in key demographics.
