Rocky Mountain Radio Station Victimized By Thieves

In Idaho Springs, Colorado, it’s homecoming week for the local high school. The Friday night lights may be a bit dimmer though, because the final football homecoming game at Gold Digger Stadium may be missing a radio broadcast.

KYGT K-Goat Radio is a small LPFM, community radio station in the Rockies about 40 miles west of Denver. Sports Director Peter Werlin told Denver 7 News that a week ago someone broke into his car and stole $6,000 of radio equipment used to broadcast the games. “That’s a lot of money. We’re kind of a keep-the-lights-on operation, so it’s a big loss,” Werlin said.

Werlin is hoping someone returns the equipment, no questions asked, before Friday. If not, he says they are going to carry the game “old-school style.” “We’re going back to what we hope will work — an analog phone system that they used from the early ’80s up. And that’s what we’ll have to use this weekend as we try to figure out how to replace our stuff if we can’t get it back.”
