KC Public Radio Purchasing Second Station

KCUR 89.3, Kansas City’s public radio station, plans to purchase a second station devoted to classical music: 91.9 FM in Kansas City. It has filed an application with the FCC.

“We’re thrilled to grow our audiences in the Kansas City arts community,” said Nico Leone, GM of KCUR 89.3, located on the University of Missouri-Kansas City Volker Campus. “This gives KCUR an opportunity to bring listeners a new escape and a little lightness and joy. At the same time, we will get to expand the news and talk program offerings on KCUR 89.3.”

The audiences for KCUR 89.3 and the classical station at 91.9 might be different. On average, only 15 to 20 percent of public radio news audiences overlap with classical audiences, Leone said. And while most commercial classical stations in the country have gone out of business in the past two decades — including KXTR in Kansas City — classical music is flourishing on public radio.
