After 20 Years, Callahan Out at WEEI

Long-time WEEI Boston morning man Gerry Callahan is out after 20 years. After his show Friday, Callahan tweeted, “Thanks to all who listened. Unfortunately, this ain’t a movie. Sometimes the bad guys win. Much more to come.” A few hours later Entercom announced the changes in a press release.
WEEI-FM has been trying to battle with Beasley’s 98.5 The Sports Hub for years. And these changes make it clear that, at least with the lineup WEEI had in place, they were not successful in that fight.

The Sports Hub was actually owned by CBS Radio, and Enterom picked the station up in the deal. Entercom decided to keep WEEI and spin The Sports Hub to Beasley. And The Sports Hub has been a consistent ratings winner. In addition to losing in the ratings, Entercom has had to deal with the drama of Kirk Minihane and Alex Riemer. Minihane went on video rants against the company and Riemer disparaged Tom Brady’s daughter. Brady appears on the station every week during football season.

An Entercom press release said the following about long-time host Gerry Callahan: “Callahan has been a dominant force and a big part of WEEI over the years. While it is now time for a new chapter, we thank him for his many contributions and the indelible mark he has made at WEEI, including his tireless work on behalf of Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.” There were no quotes from Callahan. That, combined with his tweet, clearly indicates this was not a happy split.

Mike Mutnansky, who has been co-hosting the show with Callahan ever since the troubled Kirk Minihane’s departure, will move back to hosting evenings at the station, a position he previously occupied.

Greg Hill will take over the morning slot at WEEI. Hill will move over from WAAF-FM Boston (also an Entercom station). Hill’s background is in the Rock format. His show on WEEI will be much of what it was on WAAF with additional sports content added in. Hill started at WAAF in 1986 in the promotions department. He’s been on the air since 1991.

  1. Losing Gerry because of the idiots at the top did not like him personally, and paired him up with mutt to fail.
It was bad enough losing WBCN , probably the best Rock n roll station in the world now WEEI dose the same bone head move, again CBS is involved again, they killed WBCN and now killed WEEI, the FM frequency is now a vast waste land of pink noise, now my drive to work will consist of cd’s thank you morons!!!!

  2. You morons finally succeeded in f#^*ing up the morning sports show.

I started listening in 1969.,. Guy Manella… Steve C..,.. to Eddie’s Sports Huddle…. right up until last week.

So it’s time to move the dial over to the other station.

Jerry was right…. sometythe bad guys win.

Good luck with the new format MORONS.

  3. I always liked Gerry, even though (and perhaps because) I didn’t like his politics. There was a great edge to him. My favorite period in the show’s history was when he was paired with John Dennis. The two worked together like a good play-by-play announcer (John) and a good color commentator (Gerry), even though (and perhaps because) they clearly didn’t get along personally. Alas, after Dennis burned out, the show never found the same balance. (Gerry and Kirk were both too edgy in their own ways.)

Anyway, I wish them all well. And hell, the Sports Hub too. Boston sports radio remains the country’s best, even as the talent comes and goes.
