The Daily News is reporting that the New York City radio legend died of a brain hemorrhage at Mountainside Hospital in Glenridge, NJ, on June 21. She was 83.

Thompson’s career began in 1980 when she filled in as a guest host on-air on the then-black-owned WLIB radio. Thompson interviewed a number of prominent identities over the years, including Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela. Right up to the end she was recording her weekly Kae Thompson Live podcast with her son, Eric Payne.

Thompson, who was divorced from former New Jersey General Assemblyman William D. Payne, is survived by her three children and 12 grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren.
