Podcasting Makes Huge Gains

It should come as no surprise, with the amount of attention the medium has been getting over the past year, that podcasting was the big winner in the Infinite Dial Study. For the first time ever, one out of every two Americans has now listened to a podcast, an estimated 144 million people. And that’s a huge jump from only a year ago when 44% of the U.S. population said they had never listened to a podcast.

Podcasting listening has been growing between 3-4% ever since 2013. 2018 to 2019 was the biggest percentage jump ever (44% to 51%).

The awareness is rising. But so too is the number of listeners.

Thirty-two percent, an estimated 90 million people, ages 12 and up have listened to a podcast in the last month. That’s up from 26% in 2018.

And here’s how that breaks down for 2019:
In the 12-24 demo, 40% have listened to a podcast in the last month, up from 30% in 2018.
In the 25-54 demo, 39% have listened to a podcast in the last month, up from 32% in 2018.
In the 55 and over demo, 17% have listened to a podcast in the last month, up from 13% in 2018.
There are approximately 17 million more monthly podcast listeners in 2019 than there were in 2018.

And finally, 22%, an estimated 62 million people, have listened to a podcast in the last week. That’s up from 17% in 2018.
