Radio Ink and the Hispanic Radio Conference are proud to announce that Henry Cisneros, former secretary of Housing and Urban Development under the Clinton administration, four-term San Antonio mayor, and housing innovator, will keynote at the 10th annual Hispanic Radio Conference, March 12-13 at the Intercontinental at Doral in Miami.
During his terms as mayor of San Antonio, Cisneros rebuilt the city’s economy by increasing tourism, attracting high-technology firms, and creating tens of thousands of jobs. The American Mayor named him one of the nation’s 15 best mayors of the 19th and 20th centuries.
As President Clinton’s HUD secretary, Cisneros was credited with initiating the revitalization of many of the nation’s public housing developments and with formulating policies that contributed to achieving the nation’s highest ever home ownership rate. In his role as the president’s chief representative to the nation’s cities, Cisneros personally worked in more than 200 U.S. cities in every one of the 50 states.
At this year’s conference, Cisneros will also be presented with the Medallas de Cortez Distinguished Leadership Award in recognition of his advocacy for fair housing, equitable urban development, and raising living standards for all. It is a cause to which he has dedicated much of his career and life. The Medallas de Cortez recognize excellence in Hispanic radio and are named for Raoul Cortez, founder of KCOR/San Antonio, the first Spanish-language station in the United States, in 1946. The Distinguished Leadership Award is not awarded every year but presented to those whose service and humanitarian efforts are deemed exceptional and deserving of this special honor.
Cisneros currently serves as chairman of the CityView companies, which work with urban home builders to create homes priced within the range of average families. CityView is a partner in building more than 60 communities in 13 states, incorporating more than 7,000 homes with a value of over $2 billion.
No stranger to the broadcasting industry, Cisneros was president and COO of Univision from 1997 to 2000 and today serves on its board of directors. He is the co-founder of Latino Donor Collaborative and serves on the advisory boards of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Broad Foundation, and National Hispanic University. He has a PhD in Public Administration from George Washington University and served as president of the National League of Cities.
Cisneros’ books include Latinos and the Nation’s Future, Interwoven Destinies, and Urban Real Estate Investment: A New Era of Opportunity. He has been the recipient of the Habitat for Humanity Visionary Award and was inducted into the National Association of Homebuilders’ Builders Hall of Fame.
