Another College Station Sold

We are seeing it more and more…colleges no longer interested in subsidizing campus radio stations. We learned on Tuesday that Northern Kentucky University has approved a plan to sell WNKU-FM to Bible Broadcast Corp. for $1.9 million. The college was spending about $1 million every year to keep the station going. The station has been on the air for over 30 years broadcasting to Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati.

Cincinnati.com reported that supporters of the station showed up to a special regents meeting Tuesday to try to save the station. Many left in tears. Cincymusic.com’s Ian Bolender said, “You’re not just selling a radio station, you’re selling off the well-being of our music community. Without WNKU, a lot of artists would’ve never broke in this market.”

The Board of Regents authorized President Geoffrey Mearns to execute the sale at a special meeting Tuesday. WNKU will still be on air and the operations won’t change until the sale is approved by the Federal Communications Commission, which could take several months. There have been deep state budget cuts to the college which played a role in the sale. The board also approved the sale of WNKE, WNKU’s signal in New Boston-Portsmouth, Ohio, to EMF. That deal includes the license, all equipment, and tower for $700,000 plus 75 percent of the net sale proceeds of WEKV in South Webster, also in Scioto County along with WNKE.
