The Psychology Of Coaching

Everyone is different. That’s what makes us all special. What makes one talent tick positively can be the direct opposite from another talent. One person takes input in a meeting with the rigidity of an agenda while another may welcome a more freewheeling style. That’s what makes the world go around and as coaches of talent we need to listen to and observe these nuances.

In order to be effective in coaching talent you have to reject the one-size-fits-all mentality. As a relationship needs to develop and grow between the coach and the talent, the coach needs to put their psychology hat on to analyze the type of person they are dealing with. Once that evaluation is complete the coach stands a far better chance at breaking through with the talent on key measurable methods of improvement.

When thinking of the zones that people prefer to operate in for maximum effectiveness, we need to be able to understand the raw core values of what excites them and energizes them. Those individuals who are introverted, are excited by the inner zone of a thought process and the ideas that become generated. Obviously, the extrovert is excited by the direct opposite zone and gains an energetic lift from the outer world around them.

As coaches of talent it is important we are sensitized to how they react and respond to the coaching process. It’s just as important that we are aware of how the talent listens, pays attention and responds. Do their sensors focus on facts and their senses or does the talent more frequently focus on their intuition and a historical perspective? Coaches need to also attempt to evaluate whether the talent makes decisions purely based on fact and logic or their values and a highly subjective view of the world.

Lastly, the coach should have a perspective on how the talent views life. I realize that may be a tall order! Some talent prefers to make judgements based on a planned and highly organized approach, while some talent reacts by their long-existing perceptions and they decide what they are comfortable with based on spontaneity and flexibility.

When you coach talent you need high standards of excellence to hold talent accountable for. When you recognize their differences and adjust your coaching game plan you stand a higher probability of success and continuous improvement.
