WTOP is Radio’s Top Billing Station…Again

In a streak lasting since 2014, Hubbard Radio's WTOP-FM in Washington, DC was once again the top billing radio station in 2021. BIA estimates that WTOP-FM pulled $70 million in revenues in 2021, up 12.9% from $62 million in 2020.

With $62 million in revenue in 2020, Hubbard Radio's WTOP in Washington, DC was by far the top billing radio station in 2020, according to new data from BIA Advisory Services. iHeartMedia's KIIS-FM in Los Angeles was next at $38.9 million.

With 2019 revenue at $69.8 million (according to a BIA press release), the Hubbard all-news station in Washington, DC held on to its title as the number one billing radio station in America. iHeartMedia grabbed the next four spots.

(2018) iHeart Wins The Top 10 Battle

The top 10 revenue-generating stations took in a whopping $458 million in 2018, according to BIA. iHeart captured the most revenue, $228 million from five stations.

Hubbard Radio's WTOP tops the list for the second year in a row, raking in $67.5 million in 2016, according to BIA/Kelsey. That's $2.5 million more than the station generated in 2015. WTOP has been the number one billing radio station in America for five of the last six years.

We asked the folks at BIA/Kelsey if they would gig deep into their archives to find one of their first Top Billing Radio station lists. It was from 1996 when CBS Sports Talker WFAN lead the field with $45.2 million in revenue. WGN in Chicago was next with $35.8 million. KGO in San Francisco was 3rd at $33 million, followed by WINS in New York at $31.6 million and KRTH in L.A. at $31 million. Here's a look at the top ten from BIA/Kelsey from 1996.

After being pushed down to number two by iHeartMedia's KISS-FM in Los Angeles in 2014, Hubbard's all-news WTOP in Washington D.C. has recaptured the title of top billing radio station in America. Hubbard's all-news outlet in Washington DC took in $65 million in 2015, beating iHeart's KISS-FM by $300,000.

(2015) iHeart Owns Majority Of Top Ten Billers

Five of the top 10 stations on BIA/Kelsey's highest billers of 2015 come from iHeartMedia's New York and Los Angeles clusters, totaling $234.9 million. CBS owns four of the top 10 billers, making up another $175.3 million in revenue. Three CBS stations come from New York City, the other from Chicago. Four of the top 10 stations were from the AM dial. Here's a chart of all 10 of the 2015 top billing radio stations in the country.

(2014) KIIS-FM Topples WTOP As Top Biller

With $65.9 million in revenue in 2014, iHeartMedia’s Los Angeles CHR KIIS-FM is the new number-one billing radio station in America, according to BIA/Kelsey. Hubbard's WTOP, which held the top spot for the previous four years, dropped to number two, taking in approximately $63.5 million -- the same amount that helped the all-news station take the top spot in 2013.
