Saving The AM Band is a Very Hot Topic

What is being discussed here is not the "revitalization" of the AM band, but ideas for its death and replacement.

True revitalization requires the FCC to place conditions on AM receiver manufacturers (e.g., AMAX), dump HD, require Motorola stereo, enforce anti-interference standards, etc.

Not every AM will have an opportunity to gain an FM translator.

Leave the AM band alone? You've got to be kidding. Today's young audiences can no more relate to AM than newspapers, which sadly may disappear in the not too distant future. The current migration of sports to FM is another nail in the coffin.

I own and operate 9 radio stations across central and northwest Illinois. 4 of them are AM's. I have been fortunate enough to get FM translators purchased to enable each of them to re-broadcast on FM. It has been a huge benefit to our listeners and advertisers, for them to be able to hear the programming from my AM's re-broadcast on the FM band.

Enabling more AM broadcasters to gain the benefit of re-broadcasting on FM translators, will enable them to continue to serve their communities and hopefully keep them viable financially.

V.J. Carr is right. How is allowing an AM to simulcast on FM going to help AM? Similarly, how is allowing reduced signal coverage by eliminating efficiency requirements going to help? Certainly, more interference isn't going to save AM!
