Nine More Awards For WTOP

WTOP was awarded nine Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Association Awards, including the award for best website, WTOP.com, and best on-air newscast. In 2018 alone, WTOP has received over 31 major journalism awards.

“We are proud of the work our team does as a whole to provide relevant news coverage, in a timely and creative fashion,” said Mike McMearty, WTOP’s Director of News and Programming. “We all share in these awards and consider our successes as a team, a testament to the work we do each day in an effort to serve our community.”

The awards were presented to WTOP employees on Saturday at the annual Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Association Awards luncheon at the Greenbrier Resort in Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Association is comprised of television and radio professionals from across the region.

Here’s a list of all the awards WTOP won this past weekend.

  • 1st Place: Award for Best Coverage of a Spot News Story, “Congressional Baseball Shooting,” WTOP
  • 1st Place: Award for Best Coverage of a Continuing News Story, “Charlottesville Protest,” WTOP
  • 1st Place: Award for Best Editorial or Editorial Series, Chris Core, WTOP
  • 1st Place: Award for Best Website, WTOP
  • 1st Place: Award for Best Newscast, WTOP
  • 1st Place: Award for Best Sports Anchor, George Wallace, WTOP
  • 1st Place: Douglas Southall Freeman Award, Rachel Nania, “Childcare Crisis,” WTOP
  • 2nd Place: Douglas Southall Freeman Award, Jamie Forzato, “Hooked on Heroin: Deadlier Than Ever,” WTOP
  • 2nd Place: Best Feature or Human Interest, John Aaron, “A Day in the Life of a Cop,” WTOP
