What NextRadio Users Say About Radio

NextRadio has launched a new blog series, and in that first blog, NextRadio unveils new data with the help of Edison Research. It was an online survey of 2,094 adult smartphone users who were asked specifically about radio. The questions focused on three roles radio plays in their lives: radio portability, radio’s role in the community, and fostering of musical connections. Here’s what the research uncovered.

According to the research, 90% of audio-listening respondents said they listen to traditional FM radio in the car, and 91% of FM radio-listener respondents said they stayed in the car longer to continue listening to a show or program. And, while the future of radio portability is all about the smartphone, consumers have concerns about the strain streaming places on batteries and data plans.

Fifty percent of the NextRadio-Edison Research survey respondents who are FM listeners say they tune in for community news. Thirty-five percent frequently or sometimes attend local events hosted by an FM station. And, as we consistently hear from listeners, radio is essential during times of local emergencies.

And finally, the survey found that more than half of FM-listener respondents say they listen to hear their favorite songs and 42% want to discover new songs.

This data came from a NextRadio-Edison online survey of 2,094 adult smartphone users recruited through NextRadio’s database. The survey dates were 4/22/16-5/2/16. The sample base is made up of people who opted into receiving updates on NextRadio phone compatibility, contests, or blogs.
